We have four different clones of Aglianico planted at our Merbein vineyard. Two are originating from Taurasi in Campania and two from Vulture in Basilicata. It normally has a long narrow bunch, sometimes with shoulders, but this bunch is an exception to the rule!
Aglianico is normally grown at elevation but it performs very well in the Murray Darling. It is very late ripening so slowly develops lovely complex flavours in the cooler Autumn rather than the hot January and February periods. It also has naturally very high acidity which is great for making bucketwine since we don’t adjust the acidity at all. In 2014 we are going to make individual ferments of all four clones to see what the differences are in characteristics of the finished wine.
